What are fillings?

Fillings or dental fillings are used to repair the damaged surfaces of teeth. The surface of teeth may be damaged by small fractures, damaged enamel or decay. It takes 25 to 90 minutes to place a filling in a tooth.

What different types of fillingsare there?

Dental fillings are made of gold, silver, mercury or amalgam, porcelain or ceramic, plastic, composite resin materials or a glass and acrylic mixture called glass inomer.

Is getting a filling painful?

Preparing the tooth to place a filling by removing the decayed portion using a dental drill should not be painful. Some patients find the preparation procedure uncomfortable and painful. The dentist will administer a local anaesthic to ensure that the patient does not feel pain during the procedure.

How long does recovery after fillings are placed take?

Patients may experience pain or sensitivity for a few weeks after a filling is placed. The area where the anaesthetic was injected will feel sore for a few days. The gums of the patient will also feel sore for a few days.

How do I care for my teeth after fillings are placed?

Patients should not eat for at least three hours till the anaesthesia wears off. They should not eat or drink anything that is too hot or too cold for a few days. They should avoid very hard food. They should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should follow correct dental hygiene and brush and floss their teeth regularly.

What are the alternatives to placing fillings?

Alternatives to dental fillings are dental crowns, inlays or onlays, or tooth remineralization.

Dental Fillings are a way to restore damaged, cracked, broken or decayed teeth back to their normal shape, size and function. A tooth filling involves the removal of the decayed material and cleaning of the affected area. A lining material is generally then placed over the nerve of the tooth to protect it, and then a filling material is placed on top to restore the tooth. There are many different types and sizes of dental fillings. They range from smaller, simple teeth fillings that can last for up to and over 15 years, to larger, more complex fillings. Whereas these larger fillings often last a long time, they tend to break more easily and are regarded as intermediate restorations that may require crowning in the long-term. The main types of filling include: Amalgam Fillings (‘Silver or Grey’), Composite Fillings ('White'), Layered Composite Fillings (e.g. HFO Enamel Plus), Glass Ionomer Fillings

The whole team are ace and I'm a very happy customer and now have a dentist I trustMarcella, Ireland, 21 03 24

I have to say I've never been happier after leaving a dentist. I've had too many bad experiences with dentists and had just about given up and had bad anxiety about going to a dentist again. I had the start of a root canal done and I have to say I felt quiet at ease and felt absolutely no pain and am happy to go back to have the rest done. The whole team are ace and I'm a very happy customer and now have a dentist I trust. I would highly recommend St Peter's Dental, especially for anxious people when it come's to previous bad experiences.

Now I have a treatment plan and feel so happy about itMandy, Ireland, 20 04 23

I'm taking the time to do this review because Dr. David Vard is excellent. I'm out of pain, no fuss, no bother, great advice delivered in a calm safe environment. I'll be a regular visitor from now on as the whole team were caring and kind and totally alleviated my fears. Dr. David explained the issue, and how it arose and now I have a treatment plan and feel so happy about it. Thank you. And then went next door to Killiney shopping centre, got what I needed in the chemist and had a coffee in a lovely little coffee shop. Happy days.

Brilliant and patient-focused serviceTim, Ireland, 01 09 22

The best dentist experience I've had so far! When I made the appointment, the lady who took the call proactively checked my eligibility for a government subsidy that resulted in me getting a checkup for free and a heavy discount on cleaning. Brilliant and patient-focused service! The appointment itself was also amazing, really gentle and the Dr. explained all the steps of the procedure which really put me at ease. It was clear throughout that number 1 priority was my well being and not money, as I was also advised against an invasive operation another dentist (back in Germany) had previously recommended and which turned out to not be medically beneficial at all at this point. I can only recommend this dentist!
